The definition of the word "blog", if you didn't already know, is two words stuck together to create one word. Those two words are web and log. Take away the W and the E and you are left with B L O G. Blog is short for weblog.
It's simply a term used for keeping a log, or more like a diary online. You could consider each blog post (you're reading a blog post now) as a chapter in a book.
A website could be referred to as a book, in my analogy. So, a blog is a chapter, and a website is your book. The thing is, it's a book that's always being updated and increased in length with new chapters. It's as simple as that, really.

Blogging is a real way to make money online, there's no doubt about that. However, many people in the industry will give up because of impatience and frustration. The best way to go about making money with a blog is to not think about money at all, particularly while you're just getting started.
If you focus on money, your progress will be a lot slower. So, put the money to one side and start thinking more about how you can help people out through your blog. Helping people is the whole idea of writing a blog.
Who was it that said, "You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want." It was Zig Ziglar, I believe.
And it's true, especially when it comes to blogging.
How Does Blogging Generate Revenue?
Blogging about a specific topic is the aim of the game. You wouldn't blog about how to make a homemade pizza if your website (blog) was about golf. It wouldn't make sense.
If you have a website in the golfing niche you would only write about golf related stuff. If you want to write about how to make a pizza at home you'd create a website about cooking. Makes sense, doesn't it?
Now let's say that your site is all about cooking at home. How do you make money with a cooking at home based blog?

Well, let's use Amazon in this example, but there are many more examples. If you go to Amazon and you look at all the things for sale in the cooking, and kitchenware department you'll find thousands of products in there. (Cooking is a niche)
If you choose, say, an oven that you like, you could write a review of that oven on your cooking at home website. You'd tell your readers about the oven, what it's like to use, how you rate it and whether it's worth checking out or not.
You place a special link on your blog post that links people to Amazon so that they can go check out that groovy oven you've written about. If they choose to buy the oven you get a commission from Amazon.
