A Niche Example to Get You Thinking

Do you like to play golf? That’s a niche. It’s not narrowed down enough, though. So, how about golf for seniors? Golf for teens? Golf for women?

Those are narrower choices and this is important because if you just built a website about Golf in general, it would mean you have to compete with massive authority sites about Golf.

Trying to outrank highly authoritative sites in any niche is a hard job, especially when you’re a beginner.

It’s called “niching down” when you narrow your niche. You can rank better in the search engines for a narrowed down niche. Don’t be too broad in your selection of a niche. You are better off if you choose a website name that is something like “golfforwomendotcom” than you are if you chose a site name like “golf” dot com.

 

Does it make sense? Okay, on we go.

The Next Step is Setting Up Your Website

To keep things simple, let’s say that you’ve chosen golf for teens as your niche. Now you need to set up a website and give it a name. A domain name, to be precise, is what you must get. These domain names can be dot com, dot org, dot net, etc etc. Typically for TLD (Top Level Domains) like this, they will cost about $10 to $20 a year.

WordPress is a Content Management System

Next, we need to install a CMS (Content Management System) on that domain. WordPress is the best one. It’s easy to use and the most popular CMS available.

Hosting is Required for All Websites

You need to find a place for your website to live. Without hosting, you technically don’t have a website. It’s like having a house but not having the land to put it on. There are thousands of hosting companies, some good, some bad and some are just okay.

Typically these will cost from about $5 a month to $100s of dollars, depending on where you go. Later on in this post, though, I’m going to tell you about how you can get a free WordPress website, with free hosting and lots of other goodies thrown in for good measure.

It’s Alive!!!

Once your website is “alive” you need to learn how to create content. Remember in our example we used the niche of golf, or more specifically, golf for teens. We chose golf because you’re passionate about golf. So, we need to create content all about golf for teens because that’s the niche we’ve chosen.

Since you’re already passionate about golf it will mean you know more than most people know about golf, are you with me? So, this new website about golf will have lots of golf related content. It can be text, it can be videos, pictures, how-to tutorials, etc etc…

Creating Content is What Makes Money Online

So far, we’ve got a website and hosting and now we’re beginning to create content about golf for teens, or golf for seniors, etc. Now you’re wondering how you make money by simply writing and adding pictures and maybe videos to a website, right? Time to introduce you to what’s known as an “affiliate program.”

 

What is an Affiliate Program?

Well, I think you’ve heard of Amazon. Did you know that you can “sell” Amazon’s products on your website? Yup! Actually, you’re not selling them directly from your website…

What you’re actually doing is sending your website visitors to Amazon through what is known as an “affiliate link.”

What is an Affiliate Link?

An affiliate link is a special link that is given to you by Amazon (or any other affiliate program) that “links” to a product on Amazon. Remember our little golf website? So, you could “sell” golfing products that you recommend in your articles on that website.

Maybe you wrote a review about the “xyz golfing shoes” that are available to buy from Amazon. You get an affiliate link for those shoes from Amazon and you place it in your article and tell your website visitors to “buy these xyz shoes here.”

 

 

Your Website Visitor Clicks the Link

When your visitor clicks on the affiliate link you’ve told them to click, they go to Amazon…

And Amazon knows it is you who sent them there. In return for getting Amazon a new customer, they will give you a cut of the sale they made. This is called a “commission.” These commissions are paid by Amazon at various rates (%) which are sent to you in a check, in gift certificates or other ways.

This is where you go “yippee, I made a commission!”
