What is a Blog and How Does it Work to Make Money?
A blog is basically just writing stuff online. However, there's a bit more to it than that. More specifically, you write stuff on your website. I use WordPress because it's super-easy to use. What you're reading now is a blog. Actually, it's a blog post. You write lots of blog posts on your website and people come and read them.
Getting people to come to your website to read your blog can be the tricky part.
Obviously, nobody wants to start a blog if they have nobody to read them. It would be more like a personal online diary in that case.
What is a Blog Post?
A blog post is an individual article on a website. This page is a blog post. There are hundreds more of my blog posts. The whole site itself is often referred to as "a blog". One article on a site is a blog post.

How Do You Get People To Read Your Blog?
There are many, many ways in to get people to come to your website. There's SEO, which is one of the best ways for free to get traffic. Oh, what's traffic? Sorry, I'm jumping ahead of myself. Traffic simply means people on your website. Right now if you're reading this, you are traffic.
There are also paid ways to get people to come to your site but that's not a good strategy unless you know what you're doing. PPC, Facebook, Twitter and other forms of paid traffic are available if you know how to do that. More to come on that topic in a later blog post. For now, though, let's stick to the basic free methods that everyone will use when starting out.

Blogging Definition: You're Reading an Example of a Blog
It's true. What you are now reading is an example of a blog. In this blog, I'm sharing with you the basics about what a blog is and how it works to make money. My whole website can be called a blog.
What Can You Blog About?
You can blog about any topic whatsoever. Really, anything you can dream up can be turned into a blog for your website. But, you must keep your blog to the same topic on your site. You wouldn't write a blog post about the best baby toys if your site was all about golf or camping out.
It wouldn't make sense. My website is about home business, blogging, affiliate marketing, and make money online stuff. I wouldn't write anything about Formula 1 racing on my site, it wouldn't fit in with the "theme" of the website.
How Does a Blog Work to Make Money Online?
That's the thing about "topics" we've discussed already. If my website was all about baby toys then I could use Amazon's Associate program to make money with my blogs. I could, for example, do reviews on baby's toys that are for sale on Amazon. I would get what's called an "affiliate link" from Amazon and insert it on my website.
If people who came to my website (my blog) then they could read the review and then decide to buy the baby toy that I'm recommending. This whole model to make money online is called "affiliate marketing". But I like to use a more newbie friendly term of "blogging for cash".
How Do Bloggers Get Paid?
If a person on your website clicks on your affiliate link because they liked what you've recommended to them, they will be taken to Amazon (or any other affiliate program's website) and they might decide to buy the item. When they do buy, you get a commission.
That commission (in this case an Amazon Associates commission) will be mailed out in a check. Many affiliate programs will allow you to be paid into your Paypal or other payment processors.
