I've discovered one (not so secret) tip on how to get leads on Twitter. This one tip will also help with any social media channel. The video above gives you a bonus tip to add to the one below.
Today you will learn a really easy way to get those leads on Twitter that your online business deserves. We will cover...
- Why Social Media is Important to Business Online
- How Having Lots of Followers Doesn't Guarantee Anything
- How to Use Social Media for Marketing
- My New Social Media Strategy for Small Business
- Why I Didn't Talk to My Twitter Followers
- How I Discovered (By Accident) That Conversing Is Vital
- The Exact Conversation that Changed My Mind, Word for Word
- A Bonus Tip for How to Get Leads on Twitter
Right now, at the time of writing, I have 10,800+ followers on Twitter. It wasn't always that way. I began with zero the same as anyone else does. However, that is not the purpose of this post today.
The purpose right now is to show you one simple thing that helped me to turn followers into leads for my own online business.
It really does all boil down to one simple strategy that I'd never bothered with before. Now I'm kicking myself for leaving money on the table when it comes to Twitter.

Why is Social Media Important to Business?
Like I mentioned above, social media isn't going anywhere. And it's pointless having gazillions of followers if you don't know what to do with them to get more leads to your website, on your email list or in front of your promotions, and so on.
Social Media is very important to your business because of the following reasons...
- It is a great way of branding for your business
- You can grow a targeted audience in any niche
- Social media can be utilized to get more traffic
Having Lots of Followers Does Not Guarantee Anything
Having 10,800 followers on my Twitter account is all well and good. Wow, I've got 10 thousand people following me!
So?
It's useless having so many followers if none of them are going to come to your website, read something and maybe subscribe to your mailing list or buy something you've recommended.
It's a pointless waste of time and effort growing your Twitter account to get all of those followers for no reason other than to say, look at me I've got all these followers.
How to Use Social Media for Marketing (the Right Way)
Social media can be a powerful element for any business, even offline businesses. The key to using social media for business is to engage with possible customers in real conversation.
When you use only automated tools to grow a Twitter account and you do not talk to your followers you'll get nowhere fast. Automating everything on Twitter is tantamount to spamming.
Don't do it like that! Sure, automation is very useful for many of the monotonous tasks with social media. But engaging with your connections is essential.

My New Social Media Strategy for Small Business or Big
I ignored this one thing for too long and I regret it.
However, I've come to realize that it's good that I finally learned that the one key thing I should have been doing all along is to actually strike up a real conversation with people who followed me on Twitter.
This will apply also to any social media sites like Facebook or the plethora of others out there.
Why I Didn't Talk to My Twitter Followers Before Now
To put it simply, I didn't believe it would work. I didn't know how to use Twitter for anything, let alone getting leads. That being said, I think I'll be delving into Twitter more frequently to learn even more about it.
How I Learned By Chance That Conversing on Twitter is Vital
I had a message in my inbox on Twitter. It was pretty generic. It said something like "hey there, thanks for following me, what is it exactly that you do?"
Hmm, I thought to myself. Let's see if this guy responds when I reply and tell him what I do. So, I told him I build WordPress websites and write blogs.
I was surprised that he replied within a minute. Oooooh, I thought, it's not an automated response after all. The guy had actually manually written his appreciation for my following him...
I Changed My Mind About Twitter
Twitter Follower: My name's ______, he said. I want to learn how to make a website, too. I don't know anything about coding, though.
Me: Oh, really? Honestly, I don't know anything about coding, either. Take a look at my website here. (I sent a link to this site)...
A couple of minutes later the guy sent me another message...
Twitter Follower: Wow, you made that yourself without knowing how to write code?
Me: Absolutely, buddy, it's easy peasy with WordPress! In fact, you can build a website very quickly these days but you have to add content (blogs) to it to become successful. You can't just publish a website and leave it at that if you want to make money with it.
Twitter Follower: Wow.
Me: Would you like some FREE training?
Twitter Follower: FREE? Are you sure? Is it a scam?
Me: No, there are 2 options. You can get a free account to learn how to make a website and you can also in the future upgrade to get more training later on. It's a great way to test the waters to see if you like it. Would you like a link to take a look at it? Did I mention it's FREE? lol...
This is Where Things Changed for the Better
Twitter Follower: Hey what the heck, why not? Send me a link and I will have a look now.
Me: Okay hang on a moment.
I then sent my new Twitter follower a link to my blog post which was How to Make a Website and Earn Money.
After some time had passed, maybe 30 minutes or so, I'd forgotten about the conversation. I got another message from the same guy.
Twitter Follower: OMG this is amazing for free. I can't believe it. I get TWO free websites and I can learn level one of the training for free. How cool is this?
Me: I know, it's great isn't it.
Twitter Follower: I've joined already...
Me: Really?
Twitter Follower: Yes I made a free account and I am on that site now. I want to watch some training videos so I will talk to you later, okay? And thank you so much this is awesome.
Me: You're most welcome.
I start thinking to myself, "It cannot be this easy to get leads on Twitter. I have been ignoring Twitter for 2 years because I didn't think it was a good way to get people to my site. OMG am I now kicking myself?"
Long Story Short
My new Twitter buddy upgraded a couple of days later and I gained a referral credit. Amazing. A 5-minute conversation had made me a recurring monthly commission. And you know why? Because I helped someone find what they'd always wanted, but he didn't know what it was.
See, it turns out this guy had wondered about affiliate marketing for a long time and wanted to try it without being scammed. He also was under the illusion that making websites was really hard. I pointed him in the right direction.
He's still my referral right now and I help him out all the time. Part and parcel of online business is to help your customers out, not just spam them with "hey, you. buy this and buy that." People don't respond to sales talk like that.
Automated Social Media Tools Help a Great Deal
There are lots of automated tools for social media that will help to streamline your social media marketing. I use Mass Planner 2 because it's very powerful as well as being very affordable.
Conclusion
Engage in conversation with your followers. Don't spam them with stuff and hope they buy, I tried that for 2 years with no sales. The very first conversation I had with a new follower turned into a lead. I was blown away by the simplicity of it. Of course, not all of your followers are going to turn into leads and customers.
But there's going to be a percentage that will engage if you treat them right. Talk to people on social media if you want success. I've started implementing this right away and I'm starting to see more results. I hope you do too.
