Someone recently asked me what is the best landing page plugin for WordPress, and so I started digging about online to read heaps and I noticed a lot of positive Instabuilder 2 reviews. I got my copy and created lots of amazing landing pages with it.

Well, technically speaking, any page or post on a website is a landing page. It simply means a page where people "land" on your site. For example, your about me page is a landing page. Your home page or your blog roll are landing pages. Each individual URL on your site is a landing page.
There are also different names for these pages, such as squeeze pages, opt-in pages, lead capture pages, sales pages and thank-you pages. But like I mentioned, I don't want to change a theme in order to create awesome landing pages, I want to keep the theme I like. This way I would have complete control over the look of my site and complete control over the specific landing pages I wanted to create.

- Depending on where your site is hosted you may have to use FTP to install the plugin. It's about 40mb in zipped format. This is sometimes too big to be installed using the traditional WordPress Dashboard option to upload plugins.

It is difficult to decide what plugin is the best because different people will have different opinions. I’ve used siteorigin’s plugin (free), visual composer(paid), divi(free and paid) and wp lead plus x. Out of those plugins, I think wp lead plus x is best for people who need to create a really quick page. Visual composer is the market leader. However, I don’t like the way they use shortcode to construct the page. If the plugin is disabled, all landing pages will stop working. divi is way too complex and siteorigin is not very user friendly. Wp lead plus x is very straightforward and suits me well.
I’ve had divi before, I agree it’s not as easy to use as they say it is. Siteorigin is also not very user friendly, like you said. I have visual composer on this website, as well as cornerstone, but I’ve read they don’t integrate well together, so I’ve deactivated visual composer, for now. Also activated right now is instabuilder 2. I find it to be the simplest to use out of all of them. I’ve never tried or heard of WP lead plus x, I will take a look at that one, sounds interesting.

This sounds like a very good plug-in. I was looking into ways to create a landing page that stood out and landed here. Although it does seem like a good option, it is on the expensive side. I guess $77 / year is not too bad, as I only have 3 websites but it is a recurring expense. I just started my own online business so I’m tight on money. Are there any other cheaper plug-ins at all? The bare minimum?

Instabuilder 2 isn’t $77 a year. It’s a one off cost of $77 and that covers 3 of your websites. So it’s about $25 for one site if you have 3 sites.
I don’t know of any cheaper plugins that do the same things as Instabuilder does. There is the theme by OptimizePress, which creates landing pages. There is the elegant themes option, too, but that’s a yearly cost.
